A Hospitality Asia Event
A Hospitality Asia Event
Japan’s Hotel Sector is driven by the tourism boom and the mega events
Japan has been witnessing a tourism boom in recent years which resulted hotel rooms in nine major city cities increased by 2.5 times last year, from 30K rooms to 80K. It is projected by 2025 the scale of the hotel industry is to reach 26.8 billion. According to CBRE report, the government aims to attract 40 million foreign visitors in 2020 and 60 million foreign visitors in 2030. The number of foreign inhabitants will increase from 140 millions in 2020 to 220 millions by 2030. As major events such as the Tokyo Olympics and World Expo are successively launched, changes in working methods such as reducing working days and increasing leisure time will also generate new domestic demand. With the digitalization of hospitality industry, Japan's high-end hotels and mid-sized hotels are set to benefit the most.
With the digital transformation wave, hospitality business is becoming more technology-driven. Hotel Owners and Operators still face many new challenges.
Accommodation needs will be redefined by travellers' preference in term of experiences rather than goods. With 90% of new supply consisting of limited-service hotels, of which 50% comprise of business hotels, new hotel supply is unbalanced. Many of the existing properties have aged, with a lack of modern facilities. Travelers’ expectation are harder to meet than before, with the mass application of digital technologies, hoteliers need to stay in trend and equip their facilities and management methodologies with digitalized tools as well. Hotels seeking to remain competitive must respond to tourists’ changing preferences and increasingly diverse requirements. Ultimately, hotels will need to improve the quality of lodging experience, rather than solely provide a place to stay.
